You are here: Evaluating Data > Understanding the Graph View > Creating Overlay Plots
Creating Overlay Plots
Use the File Manager right-click menu to create curve overlay plots. Curve overlay plots may be created within an existing document or created in a new document.
Creating Overlays Within an Existing Document
To create a curve overlay using an existing document file:
- Open the desired data file. (Tell me more: Opening a Data File.)
- Select a document Graph view to be used as a basic for your curve overlay plot.
(Tell me more: Using the Graph View.) Verify that the graph view is the currently displayed view.
- Select the desired steps to add to the graph from the Results view within the File Manager, then select Send to Graph
from the options at the top of the File Manager. The selected steps are added to the new graph document using the default layout.
- Customize the axis variables and curve display options as desired. (Tell me more: Customizing TRIOS Properties.)
- Save the document, if desired, by selecting Save
from the TRIOS button drop-down menu or the right-click pop-up menu. The added steps are saved. Only overlays created from steps within a single file will be saved.
- NOTE: If an overlay is created within an existing results document generated by an experiment, and the overlay contains steps from a different results document, it will NOT be saved. In order to save such an overlay, create an overlay document. Either 1) create the overlay document from the File Manager right-click menu and follow the steps outlined above with the overlay document’s graph as the basis for the overlay, or 2) follow the steps above and then export the overlay to a new overlay document ready to be saved.

Creating Overlays as a New Document
To create a curve overlay using a new document file, follow these steps:
- Open the desired data file. (Tell me more: Opening a Data File.)
- Within the File Manager, right-click and select New overlay document to open an empty document file. Make sure this new (empty) document is the currently-displayed view.
- Select the desired steps to add to the graph from the Results view within the File Manager, and drag and drop them into the overlay document. The selected steps are added to the new graph document using the default layout.
- Customize the axes variables and curve display options as desired. (Tell me more: Customizing TRIOS Properties.)
- NOTE: Alternatively, you have the ability to add one step, configure the graph axes as desired, then add the other curves. If the variable exists within the added step, TRIOS will automatically add it to the overlay plot.
- Save the document, if desired, by clicking Save from the TRIOS icon drop-down menu or the right-click pop-up menu. The added steps are saved.
Saving Overlays
- Create the desired overlay, as described above.
- If the overlay consists of data from more than one file and was not created from a New overlay document, move the data to a new results document by creating a new overlay (as described above) and selecting Send to Graph
from the options at the top of the File Manager.
- To save the document, select Save
from the TRIOS icon drop-down menu or the right-click pop-up menu.
- The data used to create the overlay document (graph) is saved within the file.
- NOTE: There is no link maintained to the original data files. When an overlay is saved, it is a snapshot of the files at that time.

Clearing Overlays
To clear any user-added curves:
- While in the Graph view, click Edit .
- In the Overlay toolbar, click Clear (shown below).
- NOTE: Click Clear to remove the "added" curves from the graph; the host document curves remain. However, if there are only host document curves in the graph, these are removed.
